چکیده

We present a three-dimensional model of the seismic anisotropy and texturing of iron crystals in the inner core. The form of the anisotropy changes suddenly at slightly less than half of the inner core radius. The outer part is composed of iron crystals of a single phase with different degrees of preferred alignment along the spin axis of the Earth. The inner part may be composed of a different phase of crystalline iron or have a different pattern of alignment. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Complex seismic anisotropy in the top of the Earth’s inner core beneath Africa

[1] We report complex seismic anisotropy in the top 80 km of the Earth’s inner core beneath Africa. The anisotropy in the top 80 km of the inner core is constrained using differential travel times, amplitude ratios, and waveforms of the PKiKP-PKIKP phases sampling Africa along various directions. The differential PKiKP-PKIKP time residuals (relative to the Preliminary Reference Earth Model [PRE...

Regional variation of inner core anisotropy from seismic normal mode observations.

Earth's solid inner core is surrounded by a convecting liquid outer core, creating the geodynamo driving the planet's magnetic field. Seismic studies using compressional body waves suggest hemispherical variation in the anisotropic structure of the inner core, but are poorly constrained because of limited earthquake and receiver distribution. Here, using normal mode splitting function measureme...

Se p 20 04 The axial ratio of hcp iron at the conditions of the Earth ’ s inner core

We present ab initio calculations of the high-temperature axial c/a ratio of hexagonalclose-packed (hcp) iron at Earth’s core pressures, in order to help interpret the observed seismic anisotropy of the inner core. The calculations are based on density functional theory, which is known to predict the properties of high-pressure iron with good accuracy. The temperature dependence of c/a is deter...

Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors Ab Initio Lattice Dynamics Calculations on the Combined Effect of Temperature and Silicon on the Stability of Different Iron Phases in the Earth's Inner Core

The Earth’s solid inner core consists mainly of iron (Fe), alloyed with lighter elements, such as silicon (Si). Interpretation of seismic anisotropy and layering requires knowledge of the stable crystal structure in the inner core. We report ab initio density functional theory calculations on the free energy and vibrational stability of pure iron and Fe–Si alloys at conditions representative of...

The inner inner core of Earth.

T solid inner core (Fig. 1) is the most remote and enigmatic part of our planet, and, next to the crust, is the smallest ‘‘official’’ subdivision of Earth’s interior. It was discovered in 1936 (1), and by 1972 it was established that it was solid, albeit with a very small rigidity (2–4). By 1993 it had been established that it was crystalline (5). The inner core is isolated from the rest of Ear...
